The Peripatetic Yankee Robert Harris PO Box 127 |
| Bob got his start in obedience years ago when he enrolled with his first Saint Bernard in an Obedience class offered by the local recreation department. It wasn't long before he was hooked. For a quarter century, he trained and competed with the big dogs. Two of his Saint Bernards earned Utility Dog titles. In the early 1990s, he "downsized," obtaining his first Chesapeake Bay Retriever. A second Chesapeake joined the household in 2001. Somewhere along the line, he applied to the AKC for, and was granted, approval to judge obedience classes. He was an instructor for two clubs while he lived on Long Island, New York. For a few years, he worked part-time for Fresh Pond Travel, assisting with their tours to Bermuda, Canada, and England. During this period, he wrote an occasional column for the English publication Dog Training Weekly under the banner of "The Peripatetic Yankee" and wrote occasional pieces for Front & Finish. When he started writing a regular column for Front & Finish, he took the name of the column from DTW for the new column. In 1999, he retired to New Hampshire's White Mountains from which he occasionally sallies forth to compete in obedience or to judge. Living close to the US-Canadian border, he is as likely to be seen at a Canadian trial as he is at a US trial. He and his Chesapeake are more frequently seen hiking in the White Mountain National Forest or swimming in the Ammonoosuc River. His alter ego, the Obedience Curmudgeon, makes an occasional cameo appearance in the column when Bob lets his guard down. |
