|
Helen Cariotis started training dogs in the mid-seventies with a bouncy Collie. Flush with success (he took 1st in Novice at the National Collie Specialty sometime in the late seventies), she decided that teaching dogs and their people could be a fun thing to do. Membership in NADOI (National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors) soon followed. After a stint with a training club, she decided to hang up her own shingle, and started Canine Counselors Dog Obedience. Helen has enjoyed competition obedience with Collies and German Shepherd Dogs, has taught thousands of dog and handler teams, and worked one-on-one with dog owners who have more serious problems. Now in its 25th year, Canine Counselors enjoys an enviable reputation in the Dallas area, and Helen has gone on to enjoy writing about dogs and training, presenting at seminars, and the challenging work of aiding her local shelter improve adoption and retention rates. She also keeps an eye on dog legislation in her community. Her NADOI jobs are her most enjoyable, from mentoring the NADOI Provisional members, reviewing membership exams, serving on the Board of Directors, and of course writing and editing NADOI Notes. She is a graduate of UT/Austin with a degree in English, is married and has five grown kids, and a German Shepherd Dog. |
